“My journey to The Hearing & Speech Center takes me back to the late 1990s when I was working at another nonprofit where one of my roles was a United Way trainer. I had the opportunity to train with the Executive Director at Lexington Hearing & Speech Center at that time. When I was pregnant with my son, Alex, everyone at United Way and area friends raved about the Early Learning Center and services at the Center. On December 9, 2000, Alexander Bendt Ansley was born. Little did I know how much my early connections with HSC would become important. Alex failed his newborn hearing screening in his left ear and his right was inconclusive. The nurse told us not to worry and to schedule a follow up test at a local ENT practice. We did and he failed again. At that point, the audiologist referred us to First Steps and to Lexington Hearing & Speech Center.

During our first visit, my husband, Erik, and I were welcomed and comforted by the entire HSC team. Our audiologist was by our side during the initial stages of our grief and guided us through the early years of Alex’s hearing loss which eventually meant fitting him with hearing aids on both ears. The speech pathology team welcomed us to family events and made sure we met with families who had been in our shoes years before. When Alex turned three, he started in the preschool and speech therapy programs in the Preschool. Dr. Jeanette embraced Alex’s love for crazy earmold colors for every superhero and sports team imaginable until he was in middle school.

At times, it still feels surreal that I have the honor of leading the group of teachers and clinicians that provided intervention, education, love, and support that helped mold my amazing child into the incredible man he is, today. All of my fears of him not speaking, being bullied, not having friends, not loving music, were destroyed by this team of advocates and family.

As a nonprofit leader, my dream was to lead The Hearing & Speech Center! This became a reality on February 1, 2011. Today, HSC is truly my second home. It is an extraordinary feeling to walk into work each day knowing I get to help continue this mission that has made such an impact on my family.”
